You're tired. Not the kind of tired that sleep fixes — you've tried that. This is a deeper exhaustion. A depletion that doesn't make sense given how little you feel you've actually done.
Where is your energy going?
The answer might surprise you. It's not the work. It's not the exercise. It's not even the lack of sleep. Most of your energy is being drained by things you're not even aware of.
The Hidden Drains
Shallow breathing — the kind most people do all day — keeps your body in a low-grade stress state. This burns energy constantly. It's like leaving all the lights on in your house, all the time. The meter keeps running.
Mental chatter — the endless commentary in your head — takes energy too. Every worry, every imagined conversation, every replay of something that already happened. Your mind is running programs you never asked it to run.
Emotional suppression — the feelings you push down instead of processing — doesn't make them go away. It just makes them heavier. You carry them everywhere, and the carrying costs energy.
Most people aren't tired from doing too much. They're tired from resisting too much.
The Breath-Energy Connection
Oxygen is fuel. When you breathe shallowly, you're running on fumes. Your cells aren't getting what they need. Your brain isn't getting what it needs. Everything works harder to achieve less.
One full, conscious breath brings more oxygen into your system than ten shallow automatic ones. Deep breathing isn't just calming — it's literally energising. You're filling the tank.
The Energy Breath
Stand up. Feet shoulder-width apart. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling your belly first, then your chest. At the top of the breath, hold for a moment — then exhale with a slight force, like you're blowing out a candle.
Do this five times. Feel the difference. The slight buzz. The aliveness returning. That's your energy coming back online.
Beyond Physical Energy
There's more to energy than physical vitality. There's life force — what some call chi, prana, or simply energy. This is the animating force that makes you alive, not just functioning.
This energy can be cultivated. Stored. Directed. It's the basis of energy healing, martial arts, and many spiritual practices. But before you can work with it, you have to stop leaking it.
Conscious breathing is step one. You stop the leaks. You start generating more than you spend. And then something shifts. You have energy not just to survive, but to create.
That's when the real work becomes possible.
