Sleep

Why your mind won't shut off at night

You're exhausted. You've been exhausted all day. But the moment your head hits the pillow, your mind lights up. Replaying the day. Planning tomorrow. Worrying about things you can't control at 2am.

Your body is tired. Your mind didn't get the memo.

This is what happens when your nervous system never fully downshifts. You've been running in high gear all day, and now you're supposed to suddenly stop. But your body doesn't work like a light switch.

The Sleep Problem

Most sleep issues aren't really sleep issues. They're winding down issues. Your body needs time to transition from the active, alert state of daytime to the relaxed, surrendered state of sleep.

Modern life doesn't give you that transition. You go from screens and stimulation right to bed and wonder why sleep doesn't come.

What you need is a bridge. Something that tells your nervous system: the day is done. You're safe. You can let go.

Conscious breathing is the bridge between waking and rest.

The Sleep Breath

Before bed, lie down and place one hand on your chest, one on your belly. Breathe so that only the hand on your belly moves. This is diaphragmatic breathing — the breath of rest.

Inhale slowly for 4 counts. Exhale slowly for 6 counts. Make the exhale longer than the inhale. This ratio activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" mode.

Do this for five minutes. That's all. You're not trying to fall asleep. You're just telling your body it's safe to slow down.

The Racing Mind

When thoughts come — and they will — don't fight them. Just notice them and return to the breath. The breath is your anchor. Every time you come back to it, you're training your mind that right now, in this moment, there's nothing to do but breathe.

The thoughts will slow. The spaces between them will grow. And somewhere in those spaces, sleep will find you.

Sleep as Practice

Good sleep isn't just about feeling rested. It's when your body heals. When your mind processes and integrates. When you connect to something deeper than your waking consciousness.

Many traditions speak of the importance of the sleep state — the dreams, the journeys, the access to other levels of awareness. But none of that is available if you can't get there in the first place.

The breath is the doorway.
